My research backround is in the broad area of Islamic Studies, ranging from Islamic Philosophy and Theology to Sharia and Legal Theory. I have been focusing on Islamic Fundamentalism and its ideological points of departure, and am interested particularly in how diversified, indigenized and local Islams to have evolved and transformed into homogeneous, global and Salafi version of Islam, especially in the East African settings where I have lived.

I am also engaged in research on Islamic Feminism, concentrating on resources for feminist reading of the Shi’ite heritage. The study explores various possibilities within the Shi’ite tradition, from doctrinal facets like Theology and Legal Theory to phenomenology of faith or various practices, which may serves as resources for a more egalitarian interpretation of Islam.
